Book BlurbWhen Olivia Middleton abandons the glamour of Park Avenue for a remote, coastal town in Maine, everyone assumes she’s being the kind do-gooder she’s always been. But Olivia has a secret: helping an injured war veteran reenter society isn’t about charity—it’s about penance. Only, Olivia’s client isn’t the grateful elderly man she’s expecting. Instead, he’s a brooding twenty-four-year-old who has no intention of being Olivia’s path to redemption . . . and whose smoldering gaze and forbidden touch might be her undoing.
Paul Langdon doesn’t need a mirror to show him he’s no longer the hotshot quarterback he was before the war. He knows he’s ugly—inside and out. He’ll do anything to stay in self-imposed exile, even accept his father’s ultimatum that Paul tolerate the newest caretaker for three months or lose his inheritance. But Paul doesn’t count on the beautiful twenty-two-year-old who makes him long for things that he can never have. And the more she slips past his defenses, the more keeping his distance is impossible.
Now Paul and Olivia have to decide: Will they help each other heal? Or are they forever broken?

This Book Nerd Says:
Once upon a time there was a wealthy and handsome young man.
When he loses his looks and charm, he turns into a beast, and locks himself away in his castle. Fearing the judgement of those who would see his face and run in fear, he keeps the company of only the trusted servants of his home, spending his days in his library.
Until the day he meets her...
The day Beauty walks into his castle, into his life, the Beast begins to change.
Familiar story right?
But the beauty (pun kinda intended) of Broken is that despite the familiarity of the story, it avoids being redundant or dull. I picked up this read after being in a massive book hangover... only to be sent into another one by this book!
I was captivated by the natural writing tone. I love a book that I can immediately get lost in, this was one of those books. The conversations flowed well and the banter was hilarious!!
It wasn't just about the silly moments that made me love it, it was the tender moments that complete the true story. It's more than just the scarred or grotesque guy meets gorgeous girl... this gorgeous girl carries her own secrets... her heart scarred in it's own way from a not so pretty history. While this Beast still has some of his own beauty hidden in himself.
Olivia Middleton is a recent college dropout determined to leave behind the glitz of NYC's upper class society. She is determined to prove that she can do some good for someone. For some it would be honorable work...philanthropic. But for Olivia, it's what she needs to do for redemption.
While her friends go back to finish their senior year of college, Olivia heads off to the middle of nowhere Maine. Although she doesn't know what to expect she is bolstered by the friendly welcome of the driver and housekeeper of the grand estate that houses just one occupant...
Former quarterback.... Former Marine. Paul's now determined to keep everyone far away from him, lest they see the scars he came back from the war with, and not just the ones that now mar his skin,. He doesn't want anyone to help him, a fact that he stresses after he scares away all the others that have come before her. But given an ultimatum, he agrees to play nice for three months, But he never agreed to her...he would have never agreed to choosing her.
She is the worst possible candidate for his rehabilitation non-efforts.
Because she will do the one thing that he has forbidden himself from doing since his return home... she will make him hope.
"This woman- this girl- is exactly the sort of person I exiled myself to Maine to avoid. She's tempting."
She has a job to do. She matches his growls and ignores his snubs, in turn giving him double dose of honesty and her own unique technique of motivation. I love that she doesn't back down from him. Despite being the wealthy rich girl she isn't a cold snob, in fact I found her endearing.
We come to realize that both Olivia and Paul have similar backgrounds & their parents expected them to follow in their wealthy business aspirations. The similarities don't end there because they also have their own roads to redemption to travel.
But it's a risk when someone determined to stay in the dark begins to want more with someone destined to want to go back to the light...
"Self-preservation knows that by keeping to yourself, you won't give someone the chance to push you away and tell you you're not worth it."
I just have to give this book 4.5 stars!
