This Book Nerd Says:
If you're lover of the second chance romance then you'll more than likely love Picking Up The Pieces. As the book begins we get a clear picture of what Emerson and Lucas's relationship was eight years prior to the present. Best friends since the ages of six and eight, they give into their feelings before they go their separate ways, Lucas to basic training and Emmy to college. Coming back to present, eight years from that night, we now know that Emmy and friends are all back home in Cloverleaf and none of them are even close to happy that Lucas is back.
Lucas is home... this time he realizes now that he has to get the only girl he ever wanted and needed back. But what he doesn't count on is how much pain he left in his wake. Their former friends close rank around Emmy and she when she's not throwing up walls to keep him out, she's throwing verbal daggers (though not as many or as sharp as those courtesy of Emmy's tried and true best friend, Savannah).
The story alternates between past and present as well as POVs. It's not one of those stories that loses you as it's jumping all over the place, rather it's well done, carefully peeling back the layers until we get the full story of what happened to Emmy in the time since Lucas broke her heart.
In full disclosure there were a number of times when I was able to predict what was going to happen, yet it never detracted from the story. There was never a moment when I wanted to put it down, in fact I read this from start to finish on a Sunday afternoon.
Apart from the return to love story, Picking Up The Pieces has another great plot focus, those friends of theirs. Emmy has a serious amazing core group of friends that serves as her family and support system. Even the newcomer Trevor quickly wins you over... and by quickly I mean immediately. At the center of that group is my personal fave character in the whole book and new book bff, Savannah.
"Look, Emmy. I know that growing up Luke was your best friend. But you were mine... It never upset me or anything like that, I just wanted you to know. You aren't just my best friend, you're my sister, and when you hurt, I hurt."
When you really understand those words of Savannah's, you will fully understand (and/or endorse) every snarky comment she throws at Lucas. She's the type of friend I would want in my corner through life, the type of friend that I try to be. It's plain to see that underneath all that protectiveness that defines Savannah, we get glimpses of some real sensitivity. I wanted to know more about her. In fact I enjoyed Savannah SO MUCH that I squealed when I realized that the next book in the series was focused on Savannah and Jeremy... then hurried on to "one click" it.
As a whole Picking Up The Pieces gives us a great love story interlaced with drama, humor, and emotion. I'm giving this one 4 stars

Jessica Prince Bio:
Born and raised around Houston Texas, Jessica spent most of her life complaining about the heat, humidity, and all around pain in the ass weather. It was only as an adult that she quickly realized the cost of living in Houston made up for not being able to breathe when she stepped outside. That's why God created central air, after all.
Jessica is the mother of a perfect little boy--she refuses to accept that he inherited her attitude and sarcastic nature no matter what her husband says.
In addition to being a wife and mom, she's also a wino, a coffee addict, and an avid lover of all types of books--romances still being her all time favs. Her husband likes to claim that reading is her obsession but she just says it's a passion...there's a difference. Not that she'd expect a boy to undertand.
Jessica has been writing since she was a little girl, but thankfully grew out of drawing her own pictures for her stories before ever publishing her first book. Because an artist she is not.
