REVIEW... RETRACE by Sigal Ehrlich + Giveaway

Nia Martins believes a fresh start will help her leave her traumatic past behind. Moving to a different country, she seeks to shake off her demons by doing the one thing that sets her free from her destructive thoughts – teaching dance. But change doesn't come easy, and all Nia really wants is to take the next breath without the perpetual suffocation that follows.

Reeves Mitchell has looked death in the eyes so many times it’s become habitual. That is, until his best friend's life was on the line. When the one thing he feared the most turns into reality, all he can do is pick up the pieces of his loss. As Reeves tries to live with the constant thought of “what if” gnawing at the back of his mind, he persistently and steadily builds a thick wall around himself.

Their solitary lives are all they have—until fate brings them together. Nia and Reeves’ new friendship helps make life, shadowed by the ghosts of their past, more bearable. But as their relationship deepens and new, suppressed feelings emerge between them, are they willing to retrace their steps back to where wounded hearts can be broken once more?

*THIS IS A STAND-ALONE NOVEL. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

This Book Nerd Says:

Both Nia and Reeves lives collide because of a chance mistake in a hotel room. From that point on their paths begin to intertwine and they quickly form a "friendship" that is much more than either of them anticipated. Both of them are hiding away from the tragedies that touched both of their separate lives three years prior. Nia leaves her home of Brazil putting much needed separation from her and the painful memory, as she settles into life in America and a new job teaching dance to young girls, she begins to find her smile again because of her new neighbor.
Reeves lives with guilt hanging on to him and feels the only way he'll ever be able to move on from it is by getting vengeance. Then he meets Nia. She captivates his thoughts immediately and for the first time in a long time, he starts to feel a need for her.
As they both look for a way to escape the guilt theey feel, they form a relationship that is a blurry mess of friendship, friends with major benefits, and emotions that run way deeper.

"Well some people just don't see what's good for them even if it's shoved in their face."
I choke on my next sip. I have an urge to shove a mirror in his face and force him to repeat his wise statement...

There wouldn't be story without some troubles, but through the obstacles their relationship faces, I appreciated that there was not any long drawn out drama caused by some misunderstanding/miscommunication. They both spoke up on things that distressed them and actually communicated about 95% of the things that were weighing on them. Reeves actually opens up to Nia sooner than I had expected him to, and while we wait for Nia's complete revelation, I loved the support she never hesitated to give Reeves.
Somewhere along their path to absolution and atonement, they find themselves on the path to a happily ever after. The need and dependency on each other is the only thing that scares two people who were previously so content with being alone in their despair.

"I'm tired, I'm so tired of always being torn, every smile I smile feels like a betrayal. Each time I laugh I feel like I shouldn't. How can I laugh and enjoy life when I took the ability to do so from someone else, from someone I loved so much?"

I'm giving  RETRACE 4 stars... and a note that I'll never look at a Scrabble board the same way again!
