Maybe-3D-Paperback-eReader Emily Portman loves her job. A writer for Breakout! Magazine, she shadows and showcases up-and-coming bands. When her next assignment takes her to Austin, Texas, she can’t wait to add the city to her map of places she’s visited. Places she’s left without looking back. Her plan is to keep moving on, and the last thing she needs is a man holding her back. She’s not going down that road again. Tyler Macy is stuck in a rut. Despite his exceptional talent as a musician, he has chosen to take a backseat with his music and let others grab the limelight. Wounded and mistrustful, he doesn’t appreciate his friends’ efforts to bring him back to center stage. Emily comes onto the scene and sees his full potential, but he fights to stay in the shadows, shutting her out before she can add to the scars another woman gave him. For Tyler to find his music again, he needs to accept the help that Emily and their friends offer. When he discovers that his muse lies underneath Emily’s skin, it is still not enough to keep her from walking away. Neither will admit what they really want until it is too late. Emily is once again thrown in Tyler’s path when she is assigned to join them on tour. Despite the pain in his past, Tyler sees that she is worth it, even if she’s stolen both his heart and peace of mind. In order for them to be together, they both must discover whether the music and their passion are enough to overcome the obstacles that separate them. Maybe finding love is worth the risk.

Walking toward him is like trudging through the deepest mud, but I hold my head high, my hands in my pockets and strides long. When I'm less than a foot away, his head turns toward me without lifting his chin, and he looks up from under his brows. The white smoke from his cigarette causes his eyes to nearly close before he pulls it from his lips and exhales upward into the air. I'm struck by how incredibly handsome he is in black wool and new jeans. I want to know if his skin feels hot under his clothes and if his back feels the same when I scratch fingernails across his spine. My fists clench in my coat pockets at the thought. This is going to be so much harder than I'd been prepared for.

AuthPhotA true child of music, Amber's parents surrounded her with the loudest beats they could find, molding her into a girl who found inspiration and meaning in lyrics and chords. Raised on John Hughes movies, Luck Dragons, and pirate ships, she dreamed of love and adventure. When Amber began to create her own world, she envisioned a place where Happy Ever Afters do exist. Since then, she has authored several romance novels, all of which focus on songs and the way they can touch people's lives. Music may not be able to fix a broken heart, but it can provide one hell of a soundtrack for healing. A full-time wife and mother with a full-time job, Amber finds her muse in everyday life and the people who bring her inspiration.

This Book Nerd Says:

There are a few reasons that Amber L. Johnson has quickly come to be one of my favorite go-to authors.
This book is one of those reasons.
I've said it before (and I'm going to say it again) the beauty of Amber's works lies in the magic she creates from realistic and relatable characters. The love stories she writes are most endearing because the stories themselves are just beautiful in nature. In Maybe, the main characters- Emily and Tyler- completely transcended my expectations for this story.
This is one of those reads where I almost don't want to talk about the story except to tell you to read it because I don't know if I could do it any further justice than what is there on the pages. But since this IS a book blog, I'll give it my best shot.

Emily is a nomad.
She has an awesome job that requires her to travel from place to place, never staying somewhere long enough for it to truly be a home. That's just fine with her though. She has no ties to anyone- none that would have her ready to miss anyone that she leaves behind. Also part of her job, getting to know the up and coming bands she writes about for the magazine. Because of that she's seen what happens when the musician's dutiful girlfriend gives up her dream for the sake of supporting her man and forgetting about herself. She already knows what could happen when you pin your dreams on the hope that your relationship would make it.
When her job leads her to Austin, TX she meets Tyler Macy, a musician who is bound for greatness; a musician that is so far removed from the stereotypical band guys Emily is used to.
Tyler Macy is incredible.
For everyone around him, Tyler's talent is undeniable and they are just waiting for when, not if, his big break comes. The problem is, Tyler has lost his inspiration and subsequently his confidence. Now he doesn't want the attention that fame and notoriety that would come along with him being the one to sing the music that he writes. When Emily shows up, the clarity and peace of mind he seeks appears as well.

But both have their own wounds that are still healing. They both know how badly betrayal feels and neither one of them want to feel that again. But the connection continues despite time and distance, leading them to face their own truths, conquering their fears and insecurities.... bringing them both home

I loved the way this book was written.
It's somewhat of a dual POV EXCEPT everything we hear from Tyler POV are just small excerpts from his journal. Small but packed full of emotion and depth. It was a different approach and so well done that I felt it was just enough to be perfect.

I read a lot of books and so of course I've read the "rock star" storyline before. But I'm going to put this out there, thus far, this is one of the best I've read.
Well like I said back at the beginning of the review, her stories never feel forced. The connection with Emily and Tyler is strong and while they may give in to their physical desires, they both don't fall into the insta-love trap. Emily while her feelings for Tyler grow, never allows herself to lose sight of who she is. She's accomplished, driven and well on the road to being successful in her own right.
So no there is no insta-love.
But I'll tell you what is there in it's place: Real Emotions.
In fact, it's the emotional connection that is the sexiest thing about the book in my opinion.
Sure, of course the steamy scenes (yes they're definitely in there) are hot, but they aren't overdone or used as a plot filler, which also happens to be another standout feature for me. Tyler defies the rock star bad boy stereotype on multiple levels and is so... human... fragile...

By the end of the story I was completely in love with Tyler Macy, yet despite this I couldn't give you a complete picture of how my mind's eye saw his physical appearance. This was one of my favorite things though, because it's his character, his pain, his healing, his quirks and his passions that won me over from the beginning all the way to the end. Seriously I mean not only is he talented but he's sensitive, that's just asking me to swoon over him. Without a doubt Tyler Macy has secured a spot as one of my most favorite book boyfriends.

This story is so... *insert weird awkward faces as I lose words to express my full adoration for this book*.
From the heart swelling book's dedication page to the last twenty words of the book, there wasn't anything that I felt lacked in anyway.
So of course I have to give this a huge recommendation and 5+ STARS

I hope you read it and love it as much as I did!
Now I'm going to go back to my fangirl self and anxiously await the next book from this impressive author.
