BLOG TOUR REVIEW... BLURRED LINES by Lauren Layne

BLURRED LINES
Lauren Layne
Releasing Aug 25th, 2015
Loveswept

In a novel that’s perfect for fans of Abbi Glines and Jessica Sorensen, USA Today bestselling author Lauren Layne delivers a sexy take on the timeless question: Can a guy and a girl really be “just friends”?

When Parker Blanton meets Ben Olsen during her freshman year of college, the connection is immediate—and platonic. Six years later, they’re still best friends, sharing an apartment in Portland’s trendy Northwest District as they happily settle into adult life. But when Parker’s boyfriend dumps her out of the blue, she starts to wonder about Ben’s no-strings-attached approach to dating. The trouble is, even with Ben as her wingman, Parker can’t seem to get the hang of casual sex—until she tries it with him.

The arrangement works perfectly . . . at first. The sex is mind-blowing, and their friendship remains as solid as ever, without any of the usual messy romantic entanglements. But when Parker’s ex decides he wants her back, Ben is shocked by a fierce stab of possessiveness. And when Ben starts seeing a girl from work, Parker finds herself plagued by unfamiliar jealousy. With their friendship on the rocks for the first time, Parker and Ben face an alarming truth: Maybe they can’t go back. And maybe, deep down, they never want to.

Check out an EXCERPT:

“Milk?” she asks again.
I take another bite of cereal, and it takes all of my self-control not to look pointedly at the bowl of cereal I’m eating. Of course we have freaking milk.
“In the fridge,” I say with a friendly smile. She smiles back and she’s got deep dimples in each cheek. Cute. I can see why Ben likes this one.
She walks past the table to the fridge, and I cringe when I see the fact that she has airhead monogrammed on the butt of her baby blue sweatpants. Really? Really?
Airhead has apparently forgotten that she wanted milk and instead pulls out one of the cans of Starbucks iced coffee that I keep stocked for Monday mornings when I need an extra pick-me-up, which is every Monday, because, well, Mondays are just the worst, aren’t they?
Airhead pops the tab and takes a sip without asking, which I guess is kind of annoying, but I’ve never really been one of those girls who likes to waste energy getting bitchy about stupid things, so I let it go.
“Hey, so I’m Parker,” I say.
“I’m Liz. Are you dating Ben’s roommate?”
Considering I know for a fact that Liz is the latest in a rather impressive streak of one-night stands, dating seems sort of a presumptuous word choice, because how does she know I’m not just a onetime sleepover guest like her?
This, too, I let pass without comment.
I mean, what else is the girl supposed to ask: Did you get drunk and sleep with a guy you barely know, like I just did?
Plus, I have a fun surprise for her.
“I am the roommate,” I say, keeping my smile friendly. I’m wearing my oldest pajamas and haven’t even pretended to have tried to take off last night’s mascara, which is now all over my face. I’m pretty sure I don’t look threatening.
But I’d be wrong.
Liz pauses halfway in, drinking my precious iced-coffee beverage, and her previously curious expression turns wary.
I mentally shrug. Ben tends to use my unisex name to full advantage by avoiding female pronouns when referring to his roommate while a booty call is in progress. He picked up this approach after several hookups that failed due to the fact that some girls still subscribe to the old girls-and-guys-can’t-be-just-friends axiom.
Amateurs.
Ben ambles into the kitchen, his sweatpants matching the style of his girl toy’s, although his are dark UO green, and instead of a tacky phrase on the back, they just have the Oregon Duck, our old college mascot. We graduated a couple years ago, so the frat-boy attire’s a little sad, but I can’t judge him too harshly since my entire workout wardrobe consists of old college shirts.
He yawns and smiles. “Morning. Have you girls met? Liz, Parker, Parker, Liz.”
Ben’s either unaware of the fact that Liz is giving him a dark look or he no longer cares now that he’s gotten laid.
Here’s the other reason I don’t exactly get my rocks off thinking about Ben in a romantic light: He’s kind of a player. As a friend, I can love him for it, but on the romantic front? Never. Ever. Not even with every possible STD test.
“Hey, what happened to the must-wear-shirts-in-the-kitchen rule?” I ask, shoveling another bite of increasingly soggy Wheat Chex into my mouth.
“No such rule exists,” he says, with a wink for Liz-slash-Airhead. Her expression softens lightly, and I resist the urge to slap a little sense into the poor girl. I want to tell her that his winks are a dime a dozen, but what’s the point? She has airhead printed on her sweatpants for God’s sake.
“There is too a rule about shirts in the kitchen,” I insist. “House rule number fourteen. Speaking of which, where are my house rules?”
“Hard to say,” he says, opening the fridge and glancing at its meager offerings before pouring a cup of coffee instead. “But I may have used them to mop up OJ the other day. Or maybe as a coaster for my beer.” He snapped his fingers. “Oh wait, no, I remember. I just plain threw them out the old-fashioned way.”
I point to the doorway. “Shirt. Now.”
He glances at Liz. “She can’t concentrate when my abs are on display. We have to give her anti-swoon pills.”
Liz giggles even as she shoots me a searching look, as though she’s trying to determine whether I really will swoon over Ben’s admittedly impressive upper body. The guy’s like a machine. He misses workouts only on the worst of his hangover days.
“Do you wanna grab some breakfast?” Liz asks Ben.

Aww, poor Airhead. She doesn’t know the name of the game.

This Book Nerd Says:
Lauren Layne is a name that is becoming synonymous with one-click for me. I fell in love with her Redemption series, so when I saw the opportunity to read the book early I jumped at it.
Blurred Lines takes that age old can a girl and a guy just be friends question and gives it a refreshing new perspective as we are thrust straight into the best friendship of Parker and Ben. Parker is a serious relationship while Ben is firmly committed to not being committed. But when everything begins to change they decide to make a deal, to get the best of both worlds... and it works... for a while.
The characterization of Parker and Ben was so fantastically done; their dialogue was perfection, all witty and the banter of true best friends, but Layne manages not to make it all jokes and no substance. Ben, is a shining example.
I know I've said it before but I *LOVE* a character like Ben. He's an iceberg character, you think you know all there is to see until you get a peek below the surface. I mean you can't go wrong with a gorgeous charmer like Ben is on the surface but when we get that peek underneath... that's where his character truly grabbed hold of my reader's heart.
That isn't to detract anything from Parker. I found her desire to rebound completely relatable and the confusion of what she wanted is something I think most people could empathize with. She's fun and can hold her own among 'the boys' but she balances that with a stability that is tempered with a vulnerability that I think she plays close to her chest.
I thought I knew where the story was going to go but I will say that there were some curveballs that I found surprising and kept the story from being entirely too cliche. What I didn't anticipate was getting a bit choked up at the end... I should have because I was choked up at the end of all of her Redemption series books. This could be my emotional reader showing but I think it's more of a testament to an author who knows what she is doing.
Note to Lauren Layne... WELL DONE.

I am giving BLURRED LINES... 4 clear Stars!!

5 STAR REVIEW... Beatless by Amber L. Johnson

Mallory Durham has been left behind and it is making her feel less like an adult and more like an afterthought.

Divorce, sickness, educational aspirations being shattered, and her Aunt Sam moving into her home, have made Mal's life nearly unrecognizable to her.

When Tucker Scott re-enters her life along with his band, will they offer what she needs to once again find her voice and self confidence or will it strip her of it even more?

Told through the dual voices of Mallory as she navigates her new world, and Aunt Sam's letters to her niece, Beatless tells the story of two women at very different points in their life, fighting the same battles; proving that no matter what age a person is, there are always lessons to be learned.

This Book Nerd Says:

I literally finished this book about thirty minutes before I sat down here to write this review. I needed to get my thoughts down while my emotions were still raw and my tears were still flowing, so here it goes y'all.
Every time I read a Amber L. Johnson book I find myself blown away by how she does what she does. It's crazy that she still surprises me at this point but here I sit stunned... crying... and declaring my love of yet another book of hers.

So why do I love Amber L. Johnson's writing?
The reasons are too many to count so I'll just give you my top three reasons:
1. Puddle Jumping
2. Maybe
3. Beatless

She has the ability to transform her characters into something so real... someone you know or knew... maybe even yourself... and then you get lost in the world she paints with her beautiful story telling ability.
Beatless is the story of Mallory.
Beatless is the story of Sam.

"But once upon a time there was a boy who didn't look at me like I was damaged. He saw all my pieces and wanted to put them together with his bare hands. As if I was worth the effort."

Mallory's character was something truly special. I'm sure all of us can recall a time when it seems like everything in life is changing too much, too fast, and leaving you behind in the dust. This is where we meet Mallory. She's starting a college she doesn't want to go to and feeling more alone than ever. But her Aunt Sam is determined to make her see that life is meant to be lived and challenges Mallory in all the best ways.

Tucker is the boy she used to know. The guy she doesn't talk to. Tucker is the guy that's going to teach Mal how to find her voice and step out from the shadows.
Tucker is what other book boyfriends hope they can be.

"The minute I saw him in the restaurant that day, I knew. He knew.
It's about time you caught up."

Beatless is the realest kind of love story. It's the good, bad, happy, sad, all encompassing kind of love story that transcends other books in the genre. It's self love, first love, true friendship and family all front and center as Mallory truly comes into herself, and I was her biggest cheerleader.

Beatless gives us the best of both worlds with Mallory's coming of age trials and Aunt Sam's letters of reflective wisdom. The characters, story and lyrics are all woven together to make a book that makes you want to curl up around it and embrace it when your done, hoping the words and the message seep into your soul for a little while longer.

THIS BOOK NERD SAYS:

Having to spend the summer with his family gets exponentially better when Gabriel Walker spots his next door neighbor. Her dark hair and curves keeps him watching from afar... at least until he decides he needs to make a move.
Unable to resist her, Gabriel quickly realizes that Lucy is something very different than he expected and he doesn't even know the half of it.
Forgetting her should be easier than it is but Lucy continues dominating his thoughts and influencing his actions and he doesn't know what it all means. not even when she shows up in his classroom. He doesn't know what it means but he's tired of denying himself.

Playing the role of the rich girl should be easy enough... but then Lucy's heart decided to get involved. Saying goodbye to Gabe was hard enough but then he shows up  at college and she's faced with either coming clean or hiding the truth to steal as much time with him as possible.

Graphic Made By Me :)

This book was such a fun read especially for the summer.
Is it going to change your life? No.
But will it make you smile? Absolutely.
Reading In The Dark gave me the same kind of thrill that I get from watching Grease... well not the exact same kind *insert a lot more steamy Rizzo scenes, minus all the synchronized dances and songs*. But like Grease, In The Dark was full of all the fun that is a summer love story; A summer love story that leads to so much more, and aren't those the best kind?
I loved all the fun aspects that were interwoven. I liked that Lucy's inner Luciana gave a different flavor to the book making her character fun and relatable. I really loved the way Gabe loved Lucy for being everything that Lucy was, every curve and all. In The Dark definitely highlights Gabe as he comes into his own, making his own decisions and finding his own happiness, and that was a great journey to see.
In fact all of the characters' maturity was pretty spot on with my expectations and I loved that the drama spots didn't lag on.

I enjoyed the peeks at the relationship between Gabe, Shep, and Tristan so much that I bumped up the first book on my TBR list because I want to know all the details of Shep and Jade's story. It was a great standalone read if you haven't read the first book so you don't have to hesitate to jump into this one but you may be rushing to one click the first book like me!
