When you’re a defense attorney in Washington, DC, you see firsthand how hard life can be, and that sometimes the only way to survive is to be harder. I, Jake Becker, have a reputation for being cold, callous, and intimidating—and that suits me just fine. In fact, it’s necessary when I’m breaking down a witness on the stand.
Complications don’t work for me—I’m a “need-to-know” type of man. If you’re my client, tell me the basic facts. If you’re my date, stick to what will turn you on. I’m not a therapist or Prince Charming—and I don’t pretend to be.
Then Chelsea McQuaid and her six orphaned nieces and nephews came along and complicated the ever-loving hell out of my life. Now I'm going to Mommy & Me classes, One Direction concerts, the emergency room, and arguing cases in the principal's office.
Chelsea’s too sweet, too innocent, and too gorgeous for her own good. She tries to be tough, but she’s not. She needs someone to help her, defend her…and the kids.
And that — that, I know how to do.
This Book Nerd Says:
I actually won a copy of this book in a giveaway and boy am I so happy I did. This was my first time reading Emma Chase and it's definitely not going to be my last.
Since this was my first foray into this author's work, I hadn't read the preceding book in this series but it definitely stood on its own as a perfect standalone.
I've got a new MAN CRUSH MONDAY candidate for the book boyfriend list and his name is Jake Becker...
Jake Becker is a hot shot lawyer on top of his game. He is committed to his job, his mentor and his friends, but not much more. He doesn't date, something his best friends are trying to change, but even if he did date he definitely wouldn't date a woman who had six kids.
A chance encounter with a young boy who reminds of someone he knew long ago, someone he was, and it changes the trajectory of his life.
The writing is solely in Jake's POV and I think that's probably one of the top reasons I loved this book so much. Chase writes his male mind so well... there's intelligence, vulnerability (even when he doesn't realize it), defensive alpha moments and it's outright entertaining. I haven't gotten to read a book that had me smiling and laughing aloud in such a long time but SUSTAINED did a glorious job at breaking that streak.
There's love and lust; steamy scenes that remind you that while this book is about a family... its core is about a man falling in love with a woman.
All six kids in the McQuaid are unique and it was a grin inducing pleasure to watch. I am a huge sucker for a man with kids story and there's a few that I've read and loved, but SUSTAINED shot to the top of my list of favorites.
Add all that with an ending I adored... I can easily say I give this 5 Stars because I really don't think I could pick anything I'd like to see different in the story. Everything had a purpose and a point and it all just worked.
I'll definitely be checking out book 3 Appealed when it releases!
