BLOG TOUR REVIEW... Reckless Abandon by Jeannine Colette

We're celebrating the release of RECKLESS ABANDON by Jeannine Colette!

RECKLESS ABANDON by Jeannine Colette
 Adult Contemporary Romance
Cover Designed by: Okay Creations
Scheduled to release: October 27, 2015

BLURB:
A heart-wrenching breakup, an accident… a loss.
Stretching out my right hand, I am reminded of the worst year of my life and all the dreams that faded in one awful weekend.
For six months I was numb.
And then I met a man.
An intense, complex, emotion extracting, sinful man.
If there's one thing I notice it’s the piercing gaze he is giving me.
So piercing because of Golden Eyes.
But what my heart doesn’t know…is he here to save me or is he the one who needs saving?

Reckless Abandon is a stand-alone novel.

*I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

This Book Nerd Says:

I read this book as a complete standalone having no more information than what the blurb provided, because of this I can say that it is indeed a great standalone read. I had one of those unexpected reactions to this story. Now maybe it was because I was a newbie to the author prior to this but either way I don't know what I expected before this but I was very happy to see that RECKLESS ABANDON didn't follow my predictions. Instead of anything typical I found a story of heartbreak and healing, love and loss and love again, and even a beautiful backstory of family (I seriously adore Emma's sister Leah).

From the blurb I knew that there would be an accident of some sort and the book's storyline wastes no time in jumping into that background information for us. The accident is a huge shaping incident for Emma but it's not the main plot. RECKLESS ABANDON is indeed a love story and it's one of the best kinds.

Readers who read Pure Abandon will have some previous knowledge of Asher but if you're like me and jump into this read as a standalone, you will enjoy the exotic intrigue that the guy with the golden gaze presents to us for the first half of the book. He's dark and dangerous but something about the hidden layers we know are there are so appealing that I found myself right there with Emma falling for him. But the best thing about Asher was the way he loved. There is something so deliciously alpha-male about the way he completely throws himself into loving when he decides to.

Both Emma and Asher have broken hearts, albeit for two different reasons, and they seemed to deal with them the same way, by not dealing with the pain. I enjoyed both characters but I have to say I appreciated Emma even more after her realization of what her family was going through in silence. It added something extra and something needed to her character and I was so pleased to see that she got to have that moment. That she found her passion and exuberance again after feeling completely broken was incredibly special.

Overall I'm giving RECKLESS ABANDON 4 golden stars!

Surviving Ice - Cover

Amazon ** Barnes and Noble ** iBooks ** Kobo ** IndieBound

  SURVIVING ICE Synopsis:
The USA TODAY bestselling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths series and Burying Water—which Kirkus Reviews called “a sexy, romantic, gangster-tinged page-turner”—returns with a new novel packed with romance, plot twists, and psychological suspense.
Ivy Lee, a talented tattoo artist who spent the early part of her twenties on the move, is looking for a place to call home. She thinks she might have finally found it working in her uncle’s tattoo shop in San Francisco. But all that changes when a robbery turns deadly, compelling her to pack up her things yet again. When they need the best, they call him. That’s why Sebastian Riker is back in California, cleaning up the mess made after a tattoo shop owner with a penchant for blackmail got himself shot. But it’s impossible to get the answers he needs from a dead body, leaving him to look elsewhere. Namely, to the twenty-something-year-old niece who believes this was a random attack. Who needs to keep believing that until Sebastian finds what he’s searching for. Ivy has one foot out of San Francisco when a chance encounter with a stranger stalls her departure. She’s always been drawn to intense men, so it’s no wonder that she now finds a reason to stay after all, quickly intoxicated by his dark smile, his intimidating strength, and his quiet control. That is, until Ivy discovers that their encounter was no accident—and that their attraction could be her undoing.

SURVIVING ICE Excerpt:

It’s just a regular ringtone. For me, though, it’s the wail of a war siren, and I’m immediately alert. There is only one person who has this number, and I didn’t expect him to use it again so soon.
The tile is cool against my bare feet as I roll out of bed. I collect the phone from the nightstand with one fluid movement, unhindered by sheets or the morning sluggishness that an average person might face. Stepping through the propped-open patio doors and onto the balcony, I answer with a low, curt “Yeah.” The sky is just beginning to lighten over the quiet bay. Dozens of boats sit moored below, their passengers lulled into deep sleep by the ocean air and rhythmic waves. I’m high enough up that I’m not likely to offend anyone with my lack of clothing, especially at this hour. Not that I’m truly concerned by it.
“Ice.”
The code name is a sharp contrast to the warm breeze skating across my bare skin. My adrenaline begins to spike, all the same. Hearing it means that I will be forced to leave this haven soon. Sooner than I had hoped.
“How is recovery going?”
I instinctively peer down at the angry red scar on the outside of my thigh, where a bullet drilled into my flesh and muscle just three weeks ago, outside of Kabul. I nearly bled out before I made it to the doc. He patched me up on a makeshift operating table, buried deep in a maze of rooms, and charged me a hefty price.
“Like new,” I lie.
“Good.” Bentley’s voice is rich and smooth, a welcome sound in a sea of strangers. “Where are you now?”
I peer out over the beautiful vista of crystal blue water and whitewashed stone buildings, the volcanic rock cliffs in the distance, reluctant to divulge my location. I sank a good chunk of my last payout on renting this one-bedroom villa for the month. It’s my private sanctuary, where I can revel in anonymity and peace for a while, before finding somewhere else to drift to.
Bentley has never asked before.
But he also has the technical capabilities to trace this call. If he really wants to find out, then he will. In fact, the second I picked up, he probably already had his answer. “Where do I need to be?” I say instead.
“San Francisco.”

This Book Nerd Says:

Wow. 5 Stars.
I knew walking into this book that I was going to need to make sure I had enough time to read it start to finish because if the previous books were any indication of what Surviving Ice was about to bring, I wouldn't be able to put it down.
And I didn't.
Even though we got a peek of Ivy in BURYING WATER, we really don't get to peek at her layers until Chasing River. My interest was definitely peeked and thus I was already thrilled to get her story. I'm keeping this spoiler free... so read on with no worries.
Ivy is a drifter. She's content with traveling the world free of any commitment. She carries the same approach when it comes to most everything else in her life...
She begins to think that maybe putting down roots won't be so bad but then she witnesses something that she can't forget, it readies her to pack her bags and get ready to leave it all behind again.
That was the plan. And it all changes when the mysterious stranger appears requesting a tattoo.  A random meeting that is anything but random.
Ivy and Sebastian are two perfectly intricate characters. I am purposely using intricate rather than complicated because they're simply not. Nothing about their character screams 'damaged', instead pointing to them just having character. I loved them both so much and I don't think I can even begin to pick a favorite between the two of them... okay I could and it would be Ivy. Her independence is unapologetic and my favorite thing about her, but the peeks at her vulnerability is what seals the deal and makes her real
But Sebastian is... Sebastian. Please let me tell you that he is so deliciously protective and alpha that it's quite impossible to not fall for him. He's so mysterious its sexy but when his revelations come, they're downright beautiful.

Surviving Ice has all the page-turner suspense as the prior books and carries along with it the maturity of a true contemporary book, and all the ear to ear smiling of a heart swelling romance, making it another trifecta of greatness.

I wish I could perfectly explain how I feel about this entire series, but I know I'd fail. This entire series by K.A. Tucker seems to be a gift that kept on giving. From Burying Water straight through to Chasing River this series kept getting 5+ Stars from me and I'll be one of the first to tell you that SURVIVING ICE brings the same magical grip of suspense that the series is full of.
Each book is definitively unique with individual tones and stories but somehow they are perfectly intertwined to give us the gift that is this series. It's been (and will remain) a favorite set of mine and while it's bittersweet to see it come to its grand finale, I have a strong confidence that Tucker is going to reel us in with whatever she gives us next and I'll be back here telling you all how she's blown my mind yet again.

Until then...
Happy Reading!

ARC REVIEW... Keeping Secrets by Lisa Eugene

Is that how a little girl sits?
No, Daddy.
How should a little girl sit?
Shoulders back and tummy in.
And how should a little girl look?
Always neat and pretty
That’s my girl.

Twenty-four-year-old Alexa Kennedy is beautiful, sharp as a whip, and at the top of her medical school class. She’s also been waging a war in her head for as long as she can remember. Depression. Hatred. Self-loathing. These feelings feed the pain inside her, fueling her quest for a perfection that she can never achieve.

In one life-changing moment, Dex Blakewell crashes into her world. Dex is funny, gorgeous, and irresistible. He chases away the darkness and fills her with light and laughter. An unusual friendship blossoms, making no demands or expectations.

Friendship turns into an unexpected love and a delicious passion. Alexa realizes that the only thing tethering her to sanity is their connection. But even Dex’s strength can’t keep her demons at bay forever.

When life overwhelms her, the outside world starts to mirror her inner turmoil. And when Dex discovers she’s been keeping horrible secrets, will she finally shatter or find a way through the darkness? Will the promise of love be enough to save her from self-destruction?

***WARNING: This book is for mature audiences and deals with topics and situations that some readers may find deeply emotional. That being said, I hope that many may find inspiration from these words. ***

*I received an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*

This Book Nerd Says:

When I was approached about reading and reviewing this book I have to say that the synopsis had completely intrigued me and I jumped at the opportunity. Having no prior experience with this author I only went into this read with the knowledge that it was going to be one of those heavier reads.
I was both completely right... and still so completely unprepared for this journey.

Alexa Kennedy is coming to the end of medical school with the grades that have her at the top of her class contending for the title of valedictorian. On the surface she has the life most people would envy.
Lisa Eugene wastes no time in revealing some of the serious issues that are plaguing Alexa. It becomes poignant and heart-rending but still a gripping story. I am glad I begun to read this book when I had no other pressing things on my schedule because once I started I couldn't stop.
When Alexa's life crashes into Dex's path they forge an unexpected friendship that transforms into a love that neither of them expected but still don't want to see it go. Dex is such a solid character and it speaks to the maturity of the book and its content. He has a history that has truly shaped his life and expectations as an adult. Dex knows how it feels to be left all too well. This vulnerability makes him so much more appealing but his steadfastness is what made me fall for him.

This story is a journey as I said before. One that took me by surprise. It was far from predictable but it all moved along smoothly. There were so many "twists" and elements that I didn't see coming and I appreciated that so very much.
Not only does KEEPING SECRETS open up the mind to discussion and personal reflection on the stigmas surrounding mental illness but it gives us a love story that transcends just Dex and Alexa but also gives us the story of how Alexa loves Alexa... and how she doesn't.
It gives us a story that will resonate for a while, the take away message a lot more important than the hot and steamy scenes (although they are present and very hot and very steamy).

I am giving KEEPING SECRETS 4 Stars!

*ARC received in exchange for an honest review*
This Book Nerd Says:

I have come to know and respect this series for being one of the most real and raw New Adult Contemporary series I've come across. Having met Zoe and Spock in the book ONE NIGHT, I was both curious and excited to see them get some of their own shine.
The story is told in Zoe's voice which was such a delight. She is so intrinsically beautifully flawed and it makes her character much more real. On the surface she is so strong but underneath that lies a lot of inner conflict. Because of this it takes a special person to see and try to peel back the layers she uses as a protective buffer.
Insert Spock.
I adore him. Spock easily crosses the line from friend to more. As he draws closer to Zoe, his concern for Zoe becomes much clearer and for good reason. It's only throughout the last chunk of the book that we get to know the real Zack (Spock).

If you are familiar with the series then you might anticipate the tone of this book, but if you're a new reader I'm going to do a little prep work for you.
ONE LIFE deals with some serious issues (depression, grief, addiction) but I love that while these issues weren't 'watered down' they were approached from a different angle than one might naturally assume. It gives us a fresh outlook on something so real but often overlooked.
The love story that was beginning to build in the previous book completely stands on its own in ONE LIFE. So while giving us peeks at characters we've come to know this book gives us a fresh new story complete with a couple of new  faces to make us smile.

The story is much more than Zoe and Spock... it's Zoe's story and for that alone, there's reason to read it.

I am giving ONE LIFE... 4 Stars!

REVIEW... Welcome To Forever (Hero's Welcome #1) by Annie Rains

If you love Kristan Higgins, Susan Mallery, or Jill Shalvis, you won’t want to miss the Hero’s Welcome military romance series! Welcome to Forever introduces a small coastal town where America’s best and brightest risk everything for love.

In Seaside, North Carolina, there are two kinds of people: Marines, and kids of Marines. Then there’s Kat Chandler. Recently hired as the principal of Seaside Elementary, Kat makes it her mission to turn the school into a place of peace and calm. That’s not going to be easy with hard-liner parents like Micah Peterson storming in, telling her how to do her job—and then kissing her with those gorgeous lips of his and turning her brain into mush.

As a Marine Sergeant and a single dad, Micah Peterson has just two priorities: doing his job better than anyone else, and getting the absolute best for his son, Ben. But when he meets Ben’s beautiful new principal, a different yearning shifts into focus. He wants her, sure, but he’s also moved by the connection Kat forges with her students. So after learning that she refuses to date Marines, Micah sets two more objectives: convincing Kat to give him a chance . . . and then holding on to her forever.

*I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review*

This Book Nerd Says:
I read this book with the hopes that it would be a good light read that would serve as a palate cleanser after some of the heavier books that I had been reading lately. I got a lot more than I expected.
Kat Chandler is the new principal of an elementary school. She's determined to make a difference and prove to the doubters that she can handle the job. Her sister and her best friend are determined to remind her that there's more to life than work and set out to make sure she gets her groove back.
The problem arises when the the person she suddenly feels "groovy" for is the father of one of her new students. Micah Peterson is all kinds of gorgeous as a dedicated single father but he's also a Marine. Falling for him would break all kinds of rules she had set for herself but it also feels like the most natural thing in the world.

I don't know if I would say the initial synopsis was misleading but I will say that I got a different story than I expected. Neither would have been bad but I'm very happy with the story I read. This is a contemporary novel and the character maturity is evident. It's book with a strong thread of military life and so I was prepared for some elements of the story but I appreciated that it didn't overwhelm Kat and Micah's story progression. There were serious moments but many more of the light moments that made me smile and chuckle a bit.
I love the "guys with kids" stories and this was definitely a sweet one.
The secondary characters were solid and added a great supporting cast. I think the author did a great job at peeking reader interest in their potential stories (I definitely made sure to add the second book to my TBR list right after I finished!)

I'm definitely pleased I got to read this one and I got exactly what I hoped to... a sweet fun read that left me feeling refreshed.
I gave Welcome To Forever 4 STARS!
