#MCM FIVE STAR REVIEW... Vertical Lines (The Vert Series #1) by Kristen Kehoe

An artist and a smart girl.
A staid family and a broken one.
She’s adorably literal; he’s big and quietly emotional.

Jordana Richards was determined to make the best of her post high school life, despite the fact that nothing about her current college experience was of her choosing: not the school or the major, and definitely not the place. But it wasn't home, so that's something. Yet, the harder she tried to fit in, the less she felt like she did.

Until the night she said screw it.

Until the night she walked out on her parents and bought her very own piece of cake.

The same night she met Brooklyn Novak: brooding artist, huge man, overall scary human being who took a keen interest in her.

Brooklyn was out of ideas. He had no art, because really, his subjects had no soul. When the girl at the convenience store clicked her way into his life on five hundred dollar shoes and the fumes of a tantrum, this changed. Jordana Richards: the rich girl with a mission who gave Brooklyn the spark he needed to create again.

Uncomfortable with their attraction, Brooks and Jordan strike a deal: he'll help her have fun, she'll be his muse for as long as he needs. Simple.

Yeah right.

The more time they spend together, the more both of them realize that what started out as a convenient relationship is now transitioning to vital, and neither knows how to deal with it.

When a truth comes to light that has the potential to break both of their worlds, Jordan and Brooks have to decide how deep their feelings really go, and just how much they are willing to sacrifice in order to be together.

This Book Nerd Says:

I stumbled across this book via Instagram. The cover caught my eye of course because... gah I just love it... but the synopsis only intensified my desire to read it as soon as I could. Fast forward to a empty Sunday afternoon and I dove in...

I didn't come up for air until there was nothing more to be read.

"She's not entitled, just privileged. And something else."

Vertical Lines was one of the stories that gave me so much more of a story than I was anticipating. The kind of story that I found myself nerding out in a "you've got you NEED to check this book out!" kinda way to anyone in listening distance afterwards. (This is far warning to the geek out covered review that's about to happen...)

In a genre that can sometimes give us those insta-love stories that don't quite register as believable with me. I found this one to have all the things I love about New Adult books AND all the things I love in a love story blended together in a perfect tale that had the pleasant mark of being believably realistic.
For me this book told me that Kristen Kehoe sure knows how to write a love story. It was written with a true sense of New Adult maturity and a beautiful sense of wisdom and understanding. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this well crafted love story.

I think the synopsis does a good job at telling you all you need to know about the plot before walking in so I don't really want to do too much more elaboration on that except that this plot is that and so much more. They aren't drawn together solely because of physical attraction. It's something greater that acts as a magnetic force that pulls them together until it feels like it's more natural than ever being apart.
Everything about Vertical Lines had a pleasant naturalness about it. Their connection felt genuine. Their issues and conflicts weren't overdone and sprang forth from very real issues. It all came together and worked out into something that still makes me feel content with every bit of it.

If I had to pick a favorite character in this story I wouldn't be able to because I love ALL the characters.
I loved both of the MCs from the very beginning and throughout the story my love for them just continued to grow deeper. Both Brooklyn and Jordana are talented, intelligent, and strong. They are so full of strength that sometimes they don't know it but it's there, undeniable and has you rooting for them in everything. I love that they found that they complimented one another.
But it doesn't end with them.
Since this is the first book in a series, it does a remarkable job at introducing us to the "supporting cast" and it goes even further by making me fall in love with all of them. Even the ones I was unsure of quickly reassured that redemption was on the horizon.
If you're familiar with the blog you'll know that the mark of a great read for me is walking away not with the book boyfriend... but with the book bestie. Vertical Lines does this several times over.
Watching the bond that Brooklyn, Nala, Hunter, and Mal have was emotional for me. The familial love that came with their bond transcended to include Jordan and I felt myself thrilled for her to know what that kind of friendship and family felt like. Even putting that aside, her relationship with Nala stands out firmly in my mind as another favorite.

Ah I could gush on and on but I'm going to stop myself and end it with this.
Vertical Lines is a new favorite book of mine.
I love this book. I love these characters. I have a strong feeling I'm going to love this series.
I'll be stalking the release of the next book and I will be sure to let you know all about it!

COVER REVEAL... Water Under The Bridge by Britney King

Water Under the Bridge Cover Reveal

Suburbia won’t know what hit them

My whole life I've wanted nothing more than to fit in.
Only my whole life I've done anything but.
That's probably because I'm anything but average. After all—female serial killers seem to be a minority in today's society.
And that's ok—because I've longed for a change for quite some time now.
Which brings me back around to fitting in.
You know what one has to do to fit in?
I do.
One has to blend.
Which is great news!
Because I realized my clock is ticking, so to speak, and now I want a family. Luckily, I've always been good at getting what I want.
So I figure what better place to blend than suburbia?
All that stuff I did before—it's water under the bridge now. I just hope it's not too late to change my ways. Here's to hoping for suburbia's sake, too.
I mean, what are the odds I could be the girl next door?
Apparently, they're better than you might think.

It sounds fantastic, the cover is HOT, and it’s on sale for preorder right now!!

  About Submerged:

One night. That’s all it was supposed to be. Blake Thomas’ entire career as a Special Agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation has led up to this one job: submerging himself in a lifestyle of fast cars and even faster women. He’s deep undercover, building a case to bring down an intricate criminal ring of car thieves in Las Vegas, with no time to think about the one woman he can’t seem to forget. He never imagined his past would become tangled with his present, threatening to be his downfall. Two years ago, Carly Mathewson planned for a one-night stand with a perfect stranger. What she didn't count on was being reminded of him every time she looked into the emerald eyes of the daughter they unexpectedly created. Since that night, she's devoted herself to keeping her life simple. But when her past refuses to stay buried, she's determined to do everything she can to keep it from jeopardizing what she's worked so hard to achieve. Suddenly, everything and everyone Carly has known aren't quite what they seemed. Every present has a past. Before they can secure a future together, Blake and Carly are forced to admit that their lives are linked by so much more than just that one night. Without warning, they’re bound together for life.

Exclusive Excerpt
I let Carly lead us into the building and towards the elevator. Once inside, I push her against the wall because the thought of not feeling her body pressed between the wall and my overheated body isn’t an option. I have a good eight or nine inches on her in height, so I lift her gently into my arms, lining up our mouths perfectly. Carly wraps her legs around my waist, her tight black skirt pushed up around her hips until I can feel the heat of her core through our clothes. My entire body feels like the Hulk right now as I fight the urge to rip my clothes clear from my skin with one tear. The elevator makes the world’s slowest accent upward before eventually depositing us onto her floor. She points without breaking our kiss, and I walk with purpose in that direction unable to set her down. Carly fumbles with the small bag tied around her wrist, dropping keys on the floor at my feet. Her sigh against my lips makes me smile uncontrollably. “I’ll get ‘em,” I whisper as I bend down, Carly still clamped firmly around my body. I slide the key inside of the knob and give it a turn. Inside, my entire focus is on the woman wrapped around me. I barely remember locking the door as we shed clothes and shoes on our way down the hallway. When we finally make it to her bedroom, I let her delicious body slide down my own. Not because I want to, but because it’s the only way to rid us of the rest of the clothes we’re wearing. Before I make a grab for her skirt, I gaze deeply into those intoxicating brown eyes and ask, “Are you sure?” I already know that I am, but I have to make sure she’s one hundred percent on board with what I have planned. “More sure than anything,” she whispers, eyes all full of lustful innocence. I step forward and run my hands from her waist up her naked torso. Carly is wearing a black satin bra with white lace trim. It’s a beautiful contradiction of purity and naughty all rolled into this perfect little woman. And as she starts to unzip the zipper on the side of that skirt, I realize with a happy heart that she’s all mine. For tonight. Because that’s all I can give her is this one perfect night. BLOG TOUR REVIEW... Dirty Deeds by Megan Erickson

Alex Dawn is saying no to men. No to bad relationships, disappointments, and smooth-talkers. Focusing on her family and her job at Payton and Sons Automotive keeps her mind occupied and her heart content. She doesn’t really miss a man’s touch, until one night, one shows up with the body of a god and a voice from her dirtiest dreams.

L.M. Spencer is only in Tory, Maryland, to scope out the town as a possible site for one of his company's hotels. The British businessman didn’t expect his car to break down or to find the hottest little American he’s ever seen holding a tire iron, piercing him with bright blue eyes.

They agree to one hot night, one dirty deed to burn out the chemistry between them. But from their first kiss, Alex can’t stop saying yes to this man. And when Spencer’s company threatens everything she cares about, they must make the choice to stand together or apart.

This Book Nerd Says:

Okay now that that's out of my system let's get into it shall we?
I fell in love with this series when I read the previous book DIRTY TALK. Brent stole my heart in a way I didn't quite expect. So when I picked up DIRTY DEEDS I was certain that he didn't need to worry about any competition. WRONG
If you like them tall and with a delicious accent then you'll probably melt for Spencer.

While I think this book could very well be read as a standalone, if you do read Dirty Talk you will walk into this book with a solid base of background info about Alex. If you skip right into Dirty Deeds you'll still enjoy it thoroughly.
Alex is now realizing how lonely her little space is now that her sister and niece have moved out and are moving forward with their own life. Maybe it's loneliness or maybe it's something else that pushes her forward into spending a night with the handsome stranger who has rolled into their town.
Nothing about Spencer seems to fit with Alex but it feels more right than anything she's ever felt before.

Spencer only had one objective when he arrived in Tory, to secure his promotion. But ever since he laid eyes on the beautiful mechanic, she quickly becomes the sole focus of his thoughts. It leads to him questioning not only his future, but making him take another look at his past.

Their chemistry is off the charts HOT.
The banter is fun and sexy. The vulnerability was also real.
While we get to see pieces of the broken Alex... I love that we got to see those pieces being put back together. Her reclamation of strength and determination of what kind of love she was worthy of was so very very beautiful.

I am giving this story 4 Dirty Good Stars and Spencer is getting added to my book boyfriend list for sure!

Megan Erickson grew up in a family that averages 5’5” on a good day and started writing to create characters who could reach the top kitchen shelf.

She’s got a couple of tattoos, has a thing for gladiators and has been called a crazy cat lady. After working as a journalist for years, she decided she liked creating her own endings better and switched back to fiction.

She lives in Pennsylvania with her husband, two kids and two cats. And no, she still can’t reach the stupid top shelf.

“A super sweet, extra sexy second chance romance that will have you laughing out loud and needing a minute to cool off. Dirty Thoughts is right!”

BLOG TOUR... Sojourn (Bellator Saga #3) by Cecilia London

Haunted by her experience at The Fed, Caroline tries to create a new identity. A new present, a new future. She can’t escape the memories that dog her when she least expects it, leaving her mired in a depression that she finds difficult to escape. Caroline needs to regain her physical and mental strength if she intends on surviving the journey to find the elusive rebellion. But that’s easier said than done with the ghosts of the past constantly whispering in her ear.

The road is long and dangerous, and there are no guarantees. She and her companions have no idea what they will find when they arrive at their destination. And what they finally discover may change everything.

Part Three of a Six Part Saga. Sojourn (approximately 89,000 words) is not a standalone and must be read after the first two books in the series. Ends in a cliffhanger.

For readers 18+. This book contains adult situations including explicit sex and violence.

*I received a copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*

This Book Nerd Says:

SOJOURN picks up right where Conscience left us... completely emotionally broken needing answers and therapy. Sojourn is stated to be a transitional book in the series and I would agree that it's spot on accurate.
(If you haven't read the previous books in the series you MUST do so before reading this book or this review or things will be unintentionally spoiled for you.)

Now that the warning is out there...

After her rescue from the Fed, Caroline finds herself nursed back to health by a trio of new friends who happen to steal my heart (LOVE them). London does a great job at adding these new characters to the "cast" seamlessly and letting the unique stories show forth while still keeping Caroline's story in the forefront.

Caroline is broken physically, mentally, and emotionally. Trying to reconcile her past with her present seems necessary but impossible. The memories are irrepressible and the darkness is overwhelming.

Once again the story flows seamlessly between past and present giving us a look at Caroline's hurt through her eyes. It makes the story so much more poignant and stirring.

It's hard to say because each story in the series depends on one another but I think this one may be my fave (thus far). I hate to see Caroline in any kind of pain but I think this one gave me the most intriguing reactions. It's still full of emotional twists, gripping plot, and one heck of an ending (!!!) but there's moments of levity that made me smile enough to balance out the intensity.
Oh and of course there's some of that infamous HEAT that suitable for the mature audience.*wink wink* ((nudge nudge))

FOUR stars!!

A wide, flat box on the table next to the door. Jack expected her to open it automatically after years of them hemming and hawing and flirting and flaking. Playing their little games that ended with them in a tangle on the floor or in the bathroom or in their bed. They usually started against the wall but sometimes gravity got the best of them. This year would be different. Their passion tempered, their minds scattered.
Caroline gasped when she opened the box. Freshwater pearls. Jack had given her a different necklace every year. Whatever jewels he could think of, and as grandiose as possible. She wondered why he’d done it when so much was in flux. Whether it would even matter as time went on. All those presents, all those gestures, all those expensive purchases. Caroline wondered if they’d all someday disappear.
Such talk was silly. Nothing would happen. Life would go on as it always had. The excesses of the Santos Administration couldn’t last forever. All her worrying and all their planning wouldn’t matter and everything would return to normal. Just like Jack had said.
She stared down at the box. At the brilliant, almost perfectly shaped orbs catching the light. She knew better than to ask. They were expensive as hell. One more pretty prize to add to her collection. One more present from a man whose grand gestures grew with each passing holiday. Caroline was determined to appreciate the gift, though she had her reservations.
“You didn’t have to do this,” she whispered.
He took the box out of her hand, carefully removing the necklace. “It’s tradition.”
They didn’t have many but he made sure to observe them all. “Does any of that matter anymore?”
“It matters to me.” Jack placed the pearls around her neck and kissed her softly. “Did you know that no two pearls are alike? Each one is completely unique, like a snowflake. The ancient Romans only allowed their emperor to wear them. They were that valuable. That precious.” He kissed her again. “Like you.”
She blinked and tried to look away from him, but he tipped her chin up. He didn’t stroke her cheek, didn’t kiss her, didn’t do any of the things that he did on their Christmas nights. Her eyes were drawn to his and for the first time in months she looked at him. Really looked at him.
They’d spend their days hustling around, doing whatever they could to keep themselves occupied. There were times when Caroline would barely see him. How often did they study each other? They had very few emotions or thoughts left unsaid but Caroline very rarely made the effort to focus on him. On his features. The way his eyes crinkled when he smiled, or the sound of his laugh. The way his hair would fall into his face when he was working late at night. The way he’d stare at her when he thought she wasn’t looking.
He was starting to look his age. They both were. Stress could destroy the body in a way that nothing else could. But she didn’t care. It didn’t matter whether Jack was young or old. Whether he was healthy or not. Whether he was angry or sad, joyful or indifferent. He was hers and always would be.
The ballroom remained silent save for the ticking of a clock. Neither one of them moved. The world ceased to exist. They were alone but they were together, and that was all that mattered. They stood there, their eyes locked together, until Jack lowered his gaze. The briefest of moments passed before he took her in his arms again.
“You are my everything, Caroline. My world, my life, the reason I exist. We’re going to get through this. I promise.”
How could he say that? She could sense that things were changing, that they soon might spiral out of control and neither one of them would be able to stop spinning. She was terrified to verbalize what she was thinking but said it anyway, knowing it would upset him. Caroline hated that her declining mood might ruin Christmas.
“I’m not sure I can believe you,” she whispered. “I’m sorry.”
“I don’t expect you to,” he said. “I can believe enough for both of us.”
